  • INTERESTING FACTS & HURDLES
  • San Marino

San Marino claims continuous independence since 301 CE, often called the world’s oldest surviving republic. It is completely surrounded by Italy. Although it's not part of the EU it uses the Euro.
  • Northern Cyprus

Northern Cyprus is only recognised by Turkey. It uses the Turkish lira, and mainly speaks Turkish Most rental cars from the Republic of Cyprus aren’t insured there unless you buy extra border insurance. Often tourist have to drop their cars off in The Republic of Cyprus and have to pick up another after crossing the border.
  • Train from Romania & Moldova

At the Moldovan border, the carriages are usually lifted so the bogies (wheelsets) can be changed from standard European gauge to the wider ex-Soviet gauge, which is a pretty unique experience for passengers.
  • Transnistria

Transnistria has its own unrecognised country, complete with border guards, army, and even plastic coins as part of its quirky local currency. Its flag still proudly features the hammer and sickle, making it one of the last places on Earth still using a Soviet emblem as a national symbol. The capital, Tiraspol, feels like a Soviet time capsule, with Lenin statues, tanks on display, and Soviet-style holidays still celebrated in a big way.
