Who are we & what were we thinking?
AbOUT US
In a time long, long before Five on the Fly existed, we, Mum and Dad got together at just 16 — and from the beginning, travel was always part of the dream. After a few overseas trips, we took the leap in our early twenties and moved to The Netherlands. Living abroad changed how we saw everything: what “home” could look like, how life could feel, and how much connection grows when you step outside the usual routine. Somewhere in that season, a quiet promise formed — that one day, we’d do it again… only this time, we’d bring the kids along for the ride.
And now-We are Five on the Fly, an Aussie family of five (two adults and three teens) who’ve made a huge, slightly wild decision. We sold our dream home, let go of most of our belongings, stepped away from our jobs, and moved the kids into online schooling so we can travel for six months before (hopefully) settling in Vietnam.
For the first six weeks of our six-month adventure, Noah, Khi’s boyfriend will be joining us on the road. It’s a special way to kick off the trip, sharing the big “firsts,” settling into travel life together, and making memories before the journey shifts into its next phase. You’ll see what it’s like navigating travel as a family while also adjusting to changing dynamics along the way because this trip isn’t just about places, it’s about people and how we grow through it.
This isn’t a gap year or a quick holiday — it’s a full life shake-up. We’re leaving behind routines, comfort zones, and familiar faces to chase something we’ve wanted for a long time: more time together, more freedom, and a different way of living that actually fits our family.Through this site and our socials we will be sharing the real, unfiltered side of it all — the excitement, the stress, the grief of letting go, the “what have we done?” moments, and the parts that make us feel more alive than we have in years. We’re doing this because we’re craving a change of pace and a deeper kind of family connection — less rushing, less
“we’ll do it one day,” and more time together outside the grind.
The five of us are all neurodiverse in our own ways, so we’ve learned that thriving often means building life with intention, flexibility, and a whole lot of compassion and frustration. Travel isn’t just “go with the flow” for us — it’s planning with purpose so everyone can feel safe, supported, and included.
Along the way, we’ll share the full lead-up and behind-the-scenes work people don’t usually show including the planning, the budgets, the spreadsheets, the storage decisions, the stress, the wins, and the “are we actually doing this?” moments. You’ll see the reality of selling up, downsizing, packing, organising, and getting everything ready; including the admin side like new passports, name changes, timelines, and endless forms required for travelling with a non-biological child.
We’ll also share what it takes to prepare education for travel, including online schooling setup, routines, and the practical juggle of keeping learning on track while life is in motion, plus the upskilling and certificates we’re working on to support long-term travel and our next chapter.
If all being neurodiverse wasn’t enough, we also have a strong queer presence in our family— and because queer identity matters in travel — we plan differently, and we’ll be sharing that too. We’ll talk openly about the extra considerations that come with sensory needs, transitions, burnout, and big crowds, as well as what queer-friendly travel looks like in real life when you’re choosing destinations, accommodation, activities, and community.
Our goal is to share practical, honest tips that make travel feel more accessible, inclusive, and doable for families like ours.If you want to follow along, come for the chaos, connection, and adventure — then travel with us in real time on our socials.
